A simple gesture like sitting down to watch an old TV show with him even is you don't like Westerns or re-runs of Star Trek will help you feel connected. Ask him about his favorite things: music, authors, books, colors, food. What's his oldest memory; which memory does he recall most frequently? (Just get to know him.) Go out and build some memories by being together and pass along your example of how to do it to the children in your family. After all, the memories we leave with others are far more important in the overall scheme of life than the personal experiences we take with us can ever be.
