The complex taste is somewhat of a surprise for such a medium roast, but I think this is because the blending of the beans is done just right. This is a good cup of coffee that needs no cream or sugar.

This Port Royal Mountain variety blend is unflavored, although Tortuga does have several flavored varieties of gourmet coffee.  I will definitely be trying some of them next.

The instructions for brewing this coffee are written for a coffee lover!  You are encouraged to start experimenting by starting with one tablespoon of coffee per cup of water. But I like a big mug of pretty strong coffee that I can “warm up” with more coffee at least once. So, for my drip coffee maker, I used three tablespoons of coffee for about eighteen ounces of water. This was perfect!

In no time I have a pie people always rave about with very little effort.”

“Wow, that would also work with pumpkin pie,” one of the ladies planning to attend the friend get-together piped in. “That’s what I’ve been asked to bring this year and I was going to buy the pie at the bakery, but I think I’ll try ‘baking my own.’”

They all laughed heartily, then the conversation continued with a suggestion that you could buy an entire turkey dinner at the supermarket and serve it beautifully on china platters and bowls and never have to admit to not having done all the work.

They discussed the virtues of instant mashed potatoes and how adding a few spices and some extra butter enhances the flavor. They mentioned gravy mixes for a lump free topping on those potatoes. Brown and serve rolls from the supermarket, and frozen vs canned string beans for a casserole.

The general theme of this group was to minimize how much time they spent in the kitchen and maximize how much time they spent with family and friends.

Reflecting on the United States economy and the economic woes reported from the rest of the world’s financial systems these past few weeks, we have noticed a possible correlation to the childhood fairy tale “Chicken Little.”

You probably recall from this old English folk tale that a tiny little chicken called Chicken Little felt a rose leaf fall on her tail one day and immediately ran in great fright crying “the sky is falling!”

First one she told was Henny Penny who joined her in spreading the message. On their way to tell the king, they met Ducky Lucky who joined their chorus. Then Goosey Loosey and Turkey Lurkey also voted for the tale.

Did we say “voted”? Well, they joined the parade of characters till they all met Foxy Loxy who lured them into his den by promising to tell them where the king lives.

The story goes that Foxy Loxy led them into his den and they never came out again.

You can draw your own conclusions about what happened to Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, and Turkey Lurkey, but you can be sure that the foxy one came out of that deal okay.

Now there are those who predict that our economy will never emerge from the den it’s in, but that’s not our area of expertise, so we won’t speculate here at I-ShopTheWorld.com Our business is running a business and we plan to keep doing just that.

We believe in persistence and hard work. Those whose wares we represent have their hopes tied into the products we represent. We don’t’ plan to let them down. We plan to be here; to keep on working and hopefully only paying our fair share to the common good in order to remain in business.

We hope to pass along many good deals to you in the coming months. We don’t expect to ever be a Wall Street presence; we are what has come to be called a Main Street business.

We are drowning out those who are trying to spread the message that the rose that fell on Wall Street was actually a thorny stem or the whole bush. We know based on history that some people will come out of this slumping economy smelling like a rose.

We know that some people are simply going to see and seize opportunity out of this turmoil and disruption. Some people are not going to fare so well and are going to need assistance. We support many organizations trying to provide that help.

In some respects poverty and unemployment are big business. Like a friend of mine said after being unemployed for four months a few years ago, “if it weren’t for unemployment, a lot of people would sure be out of work.”

Think about it. The unemployment system here in the United States is huge. We hope our customers don’t have to file to collect, but if you do, you will encounter counselors, clerks, and a cast of helpers that include those who actually keep the records and generate the checks to say nothing of the landlords collecting rent for the space these agencies use. If someone wasn’t unemployed, those people surely would be. Even our culture of helping those with less actually employs lots of people to distribute money, food, shelter, clothing, and other things of need.

We can’t predict where the large-scale economy is going, but we do believe that it will keep going and those who don’t give up on it will be a big part of its recovery.

We plan to be just as “foxy” as we can be to lure you into our den and connect you with some of the finest products from around the world. We can assure you that you’ll come out okay.

I traveled the 6 hours to visit my mother, arriving on Friday evening as she’s always liked so I could be there for “supper.” We are southerners, so that evening meal is not dinner at her house. Because my mother hadn’t been feeling well, I’d offered for my husband and me to stop and bring home dinner, but she wouldn’t hear to it.

When I arrived I found those two sisters cooking. My aunt didn’t think my mother was up to the task, so she came to help, bringing food she’d prepared at her house and pitching in to cook the rest. I believe she had just finished undergoing chemo—she was very modest about what was happening to her so she kept the details private as much as possible.

Knowing that they were both being challenged on the health front, but that they cared so much for us that they expended what little energy they had to cook supper for my birthday was an awesome outpouring of love.

That’s the kind of love I equate to the women in my family. Those I remember who have passed from this life and those who are still with us. I haven’t been at many family functions, due to the distance I live away from the home places, but when I hear about one of them, food is abundant. Love is poured out like autumn leaves flowing gently in the breeze away from their tree but never forgetting their origins.

I am truly blessed to have been born to this kind of love, to this kind of family. To have so many childhood memories of get-togethers where an abundance of home-cooked food was consumed after a blessing was said asking that it nourish our bodies and our souls.

I know my own children and grandchildren have been deprived of much contact with our deep roots, but I hope I have been able to pass along some of what it means to be connected. To stay connected. To put your last ounce of strength and energy into an expression of love for family.

My mother and my aunt symbolize a long line of strong, independent, faithful women who exhibit an amazing grace. They have inspired something in me that I feel every day, and I hope I can pass along at least once in my lifetime a gift so precious as that meal the two of them got together and cooked for my 60th birthday. I shall remember it always as one of life’s most precious moments.

October became Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 as an annual international health campaign to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, and cure. The pink ribbon came to symbolize the fight in the late ‘80s.

One thing I’ve learned is that buying pink products really puts very little cash into breast cancer research; at best many of those things just make us “feel better.” I have a couple ideas that have the potential for a greater direct impact:

If you know a breast cancer victim or survivor, take her to breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or supper). That’s what I plan to do with my friend who has survived for 25 years. Or, take a pink bouquet to the hospital and place it in the surgical ward thanking the doctors, nurses, and technicians who care for patients with breast cancer (you could even consider giving a silk orchid from I-ShopTheWorld.com for something that will last). Or, make absolutely sure you know where your contributions are going and just how much is being donated from those pink products you just can’t resist.

And, by all means be self-aware and diligent about your own health and fitness. An estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2008. An estimated 40,480 women will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second deadliest cancer in women (behind lung cancer).

Be aware, too, that although breast cancer in men is a rare disease, it can occur and it is often fatal. Less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. In 2005, when 211,400 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States, 1,690 men were diagnosed with the disease. Make sure the men in your life are aware that it can happen to them.
